Grand Knight Notes

2012 - 2013

May 13, 2013

Brothers,

Our Mothers Day breakfast was a big success. Thanks to all who pitched in setting up, cooking, serving and cleaning, and thanks to Alan for charing and organizing. I'm sure all the mothers appreciated the special recognition the breakfast provided them. I heard several attendees expressing thanks to our breakfast crew. We are noticed and appreciated for our work. I want to also recognize Phil Laughlin, one of our new candidates for membership who will be taking the 1st and 2nd degree on May 22nd. He was helping at the breakfast all morning, arriving at 7:30 and not leaving until after cleanup at noon. I know he will be a good member of our Council.

Archbishop William E. Lori will be concelebrating the 9:00 a.m. Mass this Tuesday at St. Lawrence. As you know, the Archbishop is also our K of C Supreme Chaplain. If you can, please consider taking advantage of the opportunity by attending this Mass with Archbishop Lori. Unfortunately, I have a doctor appointment and will not be able to attend.

Fraternally yours,

April 16, 2013

Brothers,

This Thursday we will have our usual social and planning meeting at the parish center. During the meeting we will be discussing the slate of candidates of officers for the upcoming fraternal year. For me it is hard to believe that we are just two and a half months from the end of this fraternal year. I have learned a great deal about how lucky we are to have a group of experienced and dedicated council members, officers and committee members. I am most appreciative of the support I have received during my time as Grand Knight.

Thank you to all who helped this past weekend with the Saturday evening social and donut Sunday activities. This Sunday a baptism is scheduled and, although Skip is scheduled for the rosary presentation after the baptism, he is not available. If someone is able to fill in for Skip, please let Tom Lauth or me know. Please remember and try to attend the Prayers for the unborn Rosary on Thursday, April 25.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Victor's uncle who passed away. Father is out of town to celebrate the funeral Mass for his uncle. I'm sorry I do not have the name of his uncle at this time.

Finally, please pray for the repose of the soul of brother Tom Lauth's father-in-law, Roy G. Lamb, Jr., who passed away on April 10, 2013. Friends and relatives may call tonight at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 4902 Berwin Road in College Park, 20140. The funeral Mass is Wednesday morning, April 17 at 11:00 am, at Holy Redeemer.

Fraternally yours,

April 1, 2013

Brothers,

I hope you all had a blessed and enjoyable Easter.

This week we will have our regular business meeting at 7:30 PM on Thursday.

As mentioned in my previous email on March 22 we have a vacancy in one of our Council's officer positions, namely the Council Warden, which needs to be filled for the remainder of the fraternal year. Article II, Sec. 5 of our by-Laws states that "Vacancies in elective offices shall be filled, after notice to the members, by election at a regular business meeting next succeeding the regular meeting at which the vacancy was created." We will vote during this Thursday's meeting to fill the vacancy. Steve Furth has been nominated to fill the vacancy. To date no additional nominations have been made. In my email on March 22 I gave the first notice to members of the vacancy and nomination. This email serves as the second notice. The 3rd notice will be given during Thursday's meeting, followed by a vote to fill the vacancy. In encourage all members to be present at the meeting to make your vote count.

After Thursday's meeting, if there are enough members interested, we will set up for a round of poker.

Friday April 5 is First Friday. Those of you who have signed up for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, please remember to be present for your assigned time slot. All others, please consider spending a few moments in Church in the presence of Our Lord.

Fraternally yours,

Mike Jump

March 20, 2013

Brothers,

Last Saturday's St. Patrick Day festivities were a tremendous success with a great turnout of members, families and friends…and the food was delicious. Thank you to all who brought the pot luck foods and a special thanks to the ladies who helped set up decorations before and clean up afterward. We are very grateful to Mary Ann Bippus who, as usual, came through with very festive decorations for the event.

This Thursday, March 21, we hold our council's social meeting at the parish center.

This is a special week for the Father Bernard Harding Council since we celebrate the 15th anniversary of it's founding. On March 19, 1998, the Knights of Columbus Council # 12180 was formed at St. Lawrence Martyr Parish. Long time Knight and parish leader, Colonel Anthony Naples, suggested Father Harding's name as the honorific title of the council. Trinitarian Fr. Bernard Harding was the Pastor of St. Lawrence Martyr Church from 1978 to 1990 and was instrumental in implementing many important projects and ministries in our parish. I encourage you to review the brief biography of Fr. Harding, which can be found on our Council's web page.

This Friday there will be Stations of the Cross and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. As usual we will support this devotion by attendance at the services and, for the benefit of parishioners, provide pizza and crab cakes on sale in the parish center before and after the services. I encourage all to attend the services, and if possible, come to help out in the kitchen, cooking and serving. This will be the last week for Lenten Pizza and Crab Cakes for this year.

Holy week begins next Sunday, March 24 -- Palm Sunday. There will be Holy Thursday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in a special temporary chapel in the parish center from 8:30 until Midnight. Brother Tom Lauth has prepared a sign up sheet for time slots throughout that evening. Please consider signing up and spending some time in the presence of Our Lord. The sign up sheet will be available during this Thursday's council meeting.

Best wishes,

March 03, 2013

Brothers,

There will be no "regular" business meeting this week because this Thursday, March 8, we will be hosting the 2nd Degree Exemplification ceremony at the parish center. The State 2nd Degree team that will be conducting the Exemplification will arrive at 6:45 PM to prepare and take charge of the ceremony. Our council will just be responsible for arranging the chairs and tables according to the Exemplification team's instructions and providing some refreshments after the ceremony. Therefore, we will need some help in arranging the seating and preparing the food. If you can help, be there at 7:00 PM.

As members of the Knights of Columbus we are united in the Body of Christ. In many ways through our Council activities our loyalty to Christ is realized through our commitment to one another. This inspiring 2nd Degree ceremony helps us realize our true potential as Christian brothers through the sacred power of UNITY. For these reasons I urge as many of you as possible to come to the exemplification. Jacket and tie are appropriate attire for the evening's ceremony.

Friday evening beginning at 6:00 we will hold the Lenten pizza and crab supper, and on Saturday night the parish social and Sunday morning the donut social. Please come pitch in and help the team members conducting these events if you are available. They can always use a helping hand.

Monday evening, March 11 a group of our Council members will be attending the Maryland March for Life in Annapolis. We will be car pooling to the event. If you are interested in coming along we will be departing for Annapolis about 4 in the afternoon. Contact Tom Lauth or me for information.

Mark your calendar for Saturday March 16. We will be holding our annual St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef Pot Luck for Council Members, spouses, girl friends and other adult friends of Members. It is always a festive evening with lots of good food, fun, song, and maybe a wee bit of blarney. Check out our Council's web page at www.kofc12180.org for the pot luck sign up sheet by clicking on "events" on the web page. If you can't find the web page, send me an email or give me a call and I will relay your pot luck food choice to our webmaster Steve Furth.

As always, fraternally yours,

Mike Jump

February 25, 2013

Greetings Council Brothers,

As you know, this evening we will be conducting our Council's regular social meeting at 7:30 pm. I invite all of you to come and enjoy some comradeship with your brother Knights. With the arrival of the Lenten season this is a busy time of the year for our Council, and tonight we will be discussing various upcoming activities and events. I encourage everyone to find some time to participate and volunteer to assist in these activities whenever you can.

Each Friday in Lent, in conjunction with the Parish 7:00 pm Stations of the Cross devotion program, our Council will be selling Pizzas, Crab Cakes and salads in the parish hall from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Daryl Bryan is chairing this activity and could use some help in the kitchen or out front taking orders and serving.

After Masses on October 9 and 10 we host the Saturday Social and Donut Sunday Social, which are chaired respectively by Jeff Faust and Darryl Bryan, and by Rick Bippus. Both of these activities need some volunteers. You can sign up at the meeting tonight or give them a call to volunteer.

Regarding spiritual enrichment activities, next Thursday Feb. 28 we have have our Prayers for the Unborn and Rosary at 7pm. Turn out has been down lately. Please consider taking this opportunity to pray with your brothers and other parishioners.

March 1 is First Friday adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. And, for those who have volunteered, please remember to be present for your designated hour. Everyone else, of course, is welcome anytime from 10 am until Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm.

on March 11 a group of Council brothers will be car pooling to Annapolis for the Maryland March for Life Mass followed by a demonstration march to the Capitol building. Afterwards our small group will be visiting a local Irish pub for some refreshments. Please consider joining us for this annual event.

Finally, please take special note: Saturday, March 16, we will be holding a St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef Pot Luck Party and Celebration at the parish center for our Council members, spouses, girl friends and other friends. As always this event is a lot of fun. It is especially noteworthy this year because we will be commemoration the 15th anniversary of the Father Bernard Harding Council's founding. So, save the date and I hope to see you all there.

Fraternally yours,

Mike Jump

February 05, 2013

Brothers,

Just a short note on this week's activities for Fr. Bernard Harding Council:

  • Thursday: Just after New Years Pat and Mary Jo Hogan went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. During Thursday's meeting Pat has graciously agreed to make a presentation for the Council Brothers describing his experiences and impressions of the various holy sites they visited through out Israel. I am sure it will be an informative opportunity to hear about his first hand experiences and personal impressions of the very places on which Our Lord lived and walked. If you haven't been able to attend a meeting in a while this would be a good opportunity to drop by for a fraternal gathering.
  • For those interested, after the meeting we will be getting together for a friendly game of poker.
  • Saturday Evening is Parish Family Social
  • Sunday is Donut Sunday. We could always use a few extra hands for both Saturday's and Sunday's events.

Vivat Jesus,

January 15, 2013

Brothers,

This Thursday, January 17 we will have our regularly scheduled Planning/Social meeting at the Parish Center. Following are some reminders of upcoming events:

Among other things we will be discussing plans for the annual March For Life in Washington. This year's March for Life marks the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Because of the scheduling of the presidential inauguration, the March For Life will be held on Friday, January 25 instead of the usual January 22 anniversary date. Several of the Knights from our Council plan to attend and will be taking the train out of Odenton to Washington, D. C. If you would like to attend and go with your brother Knights from our Council please come to our meeting this Thursday to learn about our plans or,if you are unable to come to Thursday's meeting, you may call Tom Lauth for further information at 410-551-8166.

Please get your membership dues in to our Worthy Financial Secretary, Skip Wenk, as soon as possible.

Also, if you haven't sent me your Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity report, you may bring it to me at Thursday's meeting.

Hope to see you at this Thursday's meeting.

Fraternally,

Mike Jump

January 02, 2013

Brothers,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you enjoyed a safe and fun-filled New Years Eve and a relaxing January 1. This week we begin the second half of our fraternal year, and I want to draw your attention to this week's events for our Council.

  • Thursday, January 3 at 7:30 is our regular business meeting.
  • Friday, January 4: First Friday's Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place beginning after the 9:00 am Mass until 10: 30 am, at which time Adoration will be suspended until 12:30 pm due to a funeral at St. Lawrence. Adoration will begin again at 12:30 pm until 6:30 pm, followed by Benediction and the Rosary. For those who have signed up for a specific time, Tom Lauth asks that you please sign in on the sheet in the Church vestibule as you arrive for your assigned time.
  • Dues: Our worthy Financial Secretary has sent out notices to all members to submit their dues for the new year. Please get those dues in promptly so that our worthy warden can announce that "all present are in possession of a current membership card."
  • Each year Supreme asks all councils' Grand Knights to submit a report called the Survey of Fraternal Activity summarizing the number of hours of volunteer activity for each council. As Grand Knight I am responsible for accumulating data for the survey from each member of our council and mailing the report to Supreme by January 31. To assist me in this survey I am asking each of you to submit your Individual Member Worksheet to me. You can bring your individual survey report to me this Thursday, Jan. 3 at our business meeting or on Thursday January 17 during our social meeting, or send the data to me by email no later than Jan. 17. My email address is rmjump@gmail.com. Whichever method you use, please get it to me no later than Jan. 17. Thank you.

December 04, 2012

Brothers,

I would like to call your attention to various activities of our council this week:

First, of course, is our business meeting at 7:30 on Thursday. Among other things being disused will be a vote on the possible expenditure of some of the funds that have accumulated in our Charity Fund. During the planning meeting, which immediately followed our November 14 social meeting, we had a lively discussion on this issue and a consensus was reached on the names of several local charities worthy of receiving some of our charity funds. It was decided to bring it to a vote among all members present at our December 6 business meeting. Come and make your vote count on this important issue.

Although Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 15 is still a week and a half away, we will be discussing final preparations at this week’s meeting. And after the meeting we will be assembling the candy cane hand-outs given to parishioners after this weekend’s Masses to remind them to come to the Breakfast with Santa.

We had perfect weather conditions last Saturday at Antietam, and a good turnout of members and friends for the annual event. Fr. Binoy led us in a beautiful Mass in the Dunker Church to begin the day. Tom Lauth will be giving us a full report at Thursday’s meeting. Also, Tom will be bringing Luminary materials which we need to assemble in preparation for the Christmas Eve Mass. There aren't many, so it will only take a few minutes.

First Frday – Adoration is this week. Those of you who have volunteered, please remember be present at your assigned times, and everyone else is encouraged to come and spend a few moments in the presence of Our Lord throughout the day.

December 15 beginning at 6:00 pm is our annual Pot Luck Christmas Party at Pat and Mary Jo Hogan’s Home. As I mentioned in an earlier email, it is always a wonderful party and all are encouraged to attend. If you haven’t yet notified Pat or posted it on our web site, please tell us at the meeting on Thursday if you plan on attending and let us know what you are bringing to the Pot Luck. Quit Procrastinating! Rosie is bringing here delicious Lasagna dish – guess who is the “assistant cheff” (dish washier)! Categories for bringing are Appetizer, an Entrée, Side Dish, Dessert, Bread. Pat and Mary Joe are providing beer, wine and sodas.

Calling all poker players. If we have enough members to make up a table of gamblers we will put together a round of poker following the meeting on Thursday.

Hope I haven’t forgotten anything. Come to the meeting and let me know. See you there.

Fraternally,

Mike Jump

November 20, 2012

Brother Knights,

It’s that time of year again when we all are rushing around preparing for family gatherings around Thanksgiving tables with roasted turkeys, pumpkin pies and good cheer. It is one of my all time favorite holidays. So, I would like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and, if you are traveling to be with loved ones, have a safe trip there and back home again.

Another big holiday is fast approaching, as if you hadn’t noticed with all the newspaper and TV adds for Christmas shopping and Black Friday early starting hours on, of all things, Thanksgiving night! I know you are very busy, but I would like everyone to jot down and reserve Saturday, December 15 on your calendars. That is the date for Father Bernard Harding Council’s annual Christmas Pot Luck dinner and get together. As has been the tradition these past several years, Pat and Mary Jo Hogan have graciously invited everyone to their beautiful home for this year’s party. I have always looked forward to this event because it is such a warm and welcoming atmosphere… a chance to come together with friends new and old. If you haven’t come to the party in a while, please come and enjoy a wonderful spread of delicious food, a cup of good cheer, and catch up on stories of families and friends. For those of you who have never before been able to make it to this event, I’m sure you will enjoy yourselves. The party begins at 6:00 p.m. Pat and Mary Jo’s address is:

879 Coach Way, Annapolis, Maryland
Despite the Annapolis address, it’s not in downtown Annapolis and not a long drive. In fact, it is closer to Crownsville than to downtown Annapolis. Google it. You’ll see. Pat comes from his house to all our meetings and says he can make it in no time…in his Corvette! I hope to see you all there. If you need directions or have any questions, give me a call at 410-551-5070 or email me at rmjump@gmail.com.

Following are the categories of dishes to volunteer to bring to the Pot Luck. Please choose to bring one dish and either send an email to Pat Hogan, or use the Sign-Up sheet, to both let him know what you are bringing and that you are coming. Mary Jo and Pat traditionally provide the beer, wine and soft drinks.

Here are the categories for the Christmas Pot Luck: Bread, Appetizer, an Entrée, Side Dish, Dessert, or Other

Best wishes,

Mike Jump

September 1, 2012

Brother Knights,

Time seems to be flying by. We have already completed two months of the fraternal year and September is here. My wife, Rosie, keeps filling up her humming bird feeder and bemoaning their immanent departure from Severn, Maryland and migration to South America. However, September is also a great month to remember and observe our Freedoms and the Responsibilities that accompany those freedoms. If you don’t fly your flag everyday, please do so on these days:

Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace – September 11
The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace seeks to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will – regardless of their religious faith – in prayers for peace. As we all are acutely aware September 11 is the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the flight that went down in Pennsylvania. While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of life, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world. To commemorate this tragedy with dignity and hope, the Supreme Council passed a resolution in 2004 to observe September 11 as a day of prayer for peace. “The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring to the world the Church’s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.
Our own Fr. Bernard Harding Council will commemorate this solemn day by hosting a recitation of the “Living Rosary” at 7:30 p.m. on September 11, in the Parish Center. Local law enforcement , fire and emergency personnel will also be honored as the “Unsung Heroes in Our Midst.” Please make a special effort to participate in the Living Rosary , which can be a very moving event. Light refreshments will be served.
This day is also known as Patriots Day –September 11, an annual observance to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings.

Constitution Day, 17 September
This is the 225 anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution by our Founding Fathers on 17 September 1787. Constitution Day is a national commemoration the rights guaranteed to all U.S. citizens. It provides an opportunity to celebrate our freedoms and serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect those rights and freedoms. It would be a good time to read the Constitution. You can look it up on the internet. 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 2012
It was the bloodiest day of the Civil War. After 12 hours of ferocious fighting on September 17, 1862, an estimated 23,000 soldiers had been killed, wounded or declared missing. Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North was at an end. The Battle of Antietam, proved to be a turning point in the war. Lincoln had been keeping his Emancipation Proclamation secret, waiting for a Union victory in order to make the controversial freeing of the slaves in rebellious states politically easier. This battle gave him that victory. On the weekend of September 15-17 Antietam National Battlefield Park in Sharpsburg, MD is hosting a commemorative weekend of events for the 150th anniversary. The park is near Hagerstown, MD and only about a 1 hour drive from St. Lawrence Church. It is well worth a visit.

POW / MIA Remembrance Day, 21 September
This Remembrance Day is observed across the nation on the third Friday in September each year. Americans take the time to remember those who were prisoners of war and those who are missing in action, and their families. The United States flag and National League of Families of POW / MIA flag, which symbolizes the nation’s remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing, are flown on this day and joint prayers are made for POWs and those missing in action. The National League of Families’ POW / MIA flag symbolizes the United States’ resolve to never forget POWs or those who served their country in conflicts and are still missing.

All this patriotism in September! So, brother Knights, pray, fly the flag, and remember our fallen fellow citizens and soldiers and MIAs.

Jesus Lives,

Mike Jump
